Glanders is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Burkholderia mallei. It primarily affects horses, donkeys, and mules, but can also affect humans. Symptoms in animals include fever, coughing, nasal discharge, and difficulty breathing. In humans, symptoms can include fever, chills, headache, and chest pain. Glanders is spread through contact with infected animals or their secretions, and can be fatal if left untreated. Treatment typically involves antibiotics and supportive care.
