Description

Alphacalcidol is a synthetic form of vitamin D used to treat and prevent low levels of calcium in the blood (hypocalcemia) caused by certain conditions such as kidney failure, parathyroid gland problems, and certain medications. It is also used to treat rickets, a condition caused by vitamin D deficiency. Alphacalcidol works by helping the body absorb calcium from food and supplements.

Common side effects of alphacalcidol include nausea, vomiting, constipation, headache, dizziness, and increased thirst. More serious side effects may include confusion, muscle weakness, and increased urination.

Associated brand names include: One-Alpha, Calcijex, and Decara.

Overdose effects of alphacalcidol may include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, constipation, confusion, and muscle weakness. In severe cases, an overdose of alphacalcidol can lead to coma and death.
