Ammonium hydroxide, also known as ammonia solution, is a colorless, aqueous solution of ammonia gas in water. It is a strong base with a pungent odor and is used in a variety of industrial and commercial applications. It is also used as a household cleaner and as a food additive.
Toxic effects of ammonium hydroxide include irritation of the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract. Inhalation of the vapors can cause coughing, choking, and difficulty breathing. Ingestion of the solution can cause nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Prolonged exposure to the vapors can cause pulmonary edema and chemical pneumonitis.
