A bacterial infection is an illness caused by bacteria. Bacteria are tiny, single-celled organisms that can live in many different environments. They can cause a wide range of illnesses, from mild skin infections to life-threatening diseases such as meningitis and sepsis. Bacterial infections are usually treated with antibiotics, although some infections can be prevented with vaccines.
