Schistosomiasis is a parasitic infection caused by a group of flatworms called schistosomes. It is also known as bilharzia or snail fever. The infection is spread through contact with contaminated water, such as when swimming or bathing in freshwater lakes, rivers, or streams. Symptoms of schistosomiasis can include fever, chills, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and blood in the urine or stool. In severe cases, it can cause organ damage, anemia, and even death. Treatment for schistosomiasis involves taking medications to kill the parasites and prevent further damage.
