Polymyositis is an inflammatory muscle disorder that causes muscle weakness and inflammation. It is an autoimmune disorder, meaning that the body's immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue. Symptoms of polymyositis include muscle weakness, fatigue, difficulty climbing stairs, difficulty lifting objects, and difficulty swallowing. Other symptoms may include joint pain, weight loss, fever, and rash. Treatment for polymyositis typically involves medications such as corticosteroids, immunosuppressants, and physical therapy.
