Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder that is characterized by high levels of glucose in the blood. It is caused by the body's inability to produce enough insulin or to properly use the insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone that helps the body to use glucose for energy. Without enough insulin, glucose builds up in the blood, leading to high blood sugar levels. Symptoms of type 2 diabetes include increased thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, blurred vision, and slow healing of wounds. Treatment for type 2 diabetes typically includes lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise, as well as medications to help control blood sugar levels.
