Description

Alcoholism is a chronic and progressive disease characterized by an uncontrollable craving for alcohol and an inability to limit one's drinking. It is a physical and psychological dependence on alcohol that can lead to serious health, social, and economic consequences. Alcoholism is caused by a combination of genetic, environmental, and psychological factors. People with a family history of alcoholism are more likely to develop the disorder, as are those who have experienced traumatic events or have mental health issues. Treatment for alcoholism typically involves counseling, support groups, and medications.
